How to Declutter Your Kitchen – Simple Tips to Create a Calm, Joyful Space

Chez Beccy's guide to transforming your kitchen into a haven of calm, beauty and connection.

The kitchen is the heart of the home — a place where we cook, gather, chat, and unwind. But when clutter builds up, it can start to feel chaotic rather than comforting.

Let’s change that! With a little time and intention, you can transform your kitchen into a space that feels calm, uplifting and utterly joyful. Whether you're preparing a pot of tea, baking a batch of scones, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, a tidy kitchen helps everything feel that little bit more lovely.

Here are my favourite tips to help you declutter your kitchen — without feeling overwhelmed.

1. Clear Out Takeaway Clutter

Start small and simple: get rid of anything lingering from takeaways. That includes:

  • Extra chopsticks
  • Sauce sachets
  • Old salt and pepper packets

If you do want to keep some, pop them in a labelled basket or a small Tupperware box. No more stray sachets in every drawer!

2. Tidy One Cupboard Shelf at a Time

Trying to declutter everything at once is exhausting — so don’t! Instead:

  • Pick one shelf
  • Throw away anything out of date or empty
  • Wipe down the shelf
  • Arrange items so you can see what you have

This helps you stay on top of things without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Refresh One Drawer (Like Your Cutlery Drawer)

Drawers can be sneaky places for clutter. Start with your cutlery drawer:

  • Empty it completely
  • Clean the drawer
  • Get rid of anything broken or unused
  • Only return what you use and love

You’ll be amazed how satisfying this is.

4. Let Go of Duplicates

Be honest — how many mugs, plates or spoons do you really need?

  • Gather all your mugs on the table
  • Choose the ones you use and love
  • Donate the rest

It’s freeing, and it makes your favourites easier to find.

5. Donate What You Never Use

That bread maker still in its box? The saucepans you never reach for?

If it’s gathering dust, it’s time to pass it on. Someone else will appreciate it — and you’ll love the extra space.

6. Keep a Donation Box Handy

Keep a designated donation box in your under-stairs cupboard or garage. That way, any time you spot something to pass on, you’ve got a place for it — and it’s easy to drop off when it’s full.

7. Streamline Your Cleaning Supplies

Under-sink cupboards are often a jumble. Time to sort them:

  • Throw away empty bottles and old cloths
  • Group items in baskets
  • Keep everyday products at the front for easy access

It’s so much more satisfying to clean when your supplies are neat!

8. Clear Your Countertops

Clutter-free counters make a world of difference. Only keep out:

  • Items you use every day
  • Things that bring you joy

Everything else? Store it in a cupboard.

9. Use Hooks to Display (and Store!) Beautiful Things

Hooks are your best friend. Try:

  • Decorative wall hooks for aprons, oven gloves and tea towels
  • Adhesive hooks inside cupboard doors for bottle brushes, reusable bags, or cloths

It’s both practical and pretty — and it keeps your surfaces clear.

10. Declutter the Pantry

Pantry shelves can fill up fast. Time to check:

  • Throw away out-of-date items (especially spices and flour)
  • Group similar things in baskets (like pasta and grains)
  • Label baskets so you can lift them out easily

Try creating a “Use Next” basket for anything nearing its sell-by date — perfect for reducing food waste.

11. Tame the Tupperware!

We all have that one drawer… Here’s how to fix it:

  • Match lids to bases — discard any mismatches
  • Get rid of anything cracked or warped
  • Store lids upright in a basket to keep things tidy

Now… Enjoy It!

Your kitchen is a space for connection, joy, and creativity. Once it's decluttered, you'll feel calmer and more inspired.

So pop on your apron, grab a beautiful tea towel, and bake something delicious. Make a glorious mess — because now it’s a joy to tidy up!
