Meet the amazing women who make my bags

ethical jute bags, sustainable jute bags, social enterprise india

Cocobagh Social Business Venture was set up by WBC in 2015 in West Bengal. It provides training and creates employment opportunities in the local community.

It focuses on empowering widowed women who have little or no access to other training or employment. It teaches them the male-dominated art of stitching and bag making. The goal is to support these women by providing them with the basic income and skills and route to employment. So ultimately they can afford to send their children to school.

Cocobagh is a sustainable business where all the profits are reinvested back into the project to offer more opportunities for the whole community.

Cocobagh identifies local women needing support and invites them to attend training workshops where they learn the art of stitching and bag making.

They are paid for their time and encouraged to join the project permanently. They eventually become employed as stitchers.

To date 18 women have been part of this project and 12 are now employed on a permanent basis.

It takes 6 months of training for each student to reach a commercially viable standard of stitching.

I am very proud Chez Beccy is able to support this project. And if you choose to buy either my Red Shooting Hearts Juco Shoulder Bag or my Red Shooting Heart Luxury Canvas Shopper, you can also support this project too.
