Did you know the use of tea towels goes back centuries!
Back in the 18th century they were used to insulate tea pots at tea ceremonies, dry fine china and cover baked goodies...hence the name, tea towel.
Tea towels were often used to practice the art of embroidery with flowers, initials and other designs created on them. They were then given to friends and family as gifts.
By the 19th and 20th centuries most tea towels were simpler and made from striped or check cloth.
While a dish towel can be made from terry cloth, linen or cotton a tea towel is only made from linen or cotton.
Christmas tea towels make great stocking fillers.
